Hi, I’m Alice,

your Jacksonville-based photographer, and I’m here to make sure your family session is not just beautiful but also fun and stress-free! With years of experience capturing families, I know how important it is for everyone to feel comfortable, relaxed, and prepared for the big day.

While it’s my job to create stunning images, there are a few simple ways you can help make your session even better. Here are some tips to ensure you look and feel your best during our time together…

What You’ll Find in This Guide:

Finding the Perfect Location

Choosing the right location sets the tone for your family session, whether you want something cozy, modern, or full of natural beauty. Here are some of my favorite options:

Natural Beauty: Parks with lush greenery, tall trees, and open fields are perfect for a relaxed, organic feel. Jacksonville and Jacksonville Beach offer plenty of stunning outdoor spots.

Urban Vibes: For a more modern and edgy look, downtown areas with reflective buildings and cool architecture create a stylish, urban atmosphere.

Beach Bliss: The beach is always a classic choice! Morning brings soft blue and pink tones, while sunset sessions offer that golden hour glow everyone loves.

Cozy and Familiar: Want a more intimate feel? Try a location with personal meaning, like a favorite park or even your own backyard. The comfort of familiar surroundings always shines through in photos.

Studio Sessions: If you prefer a more controlled environment, a studio session gives us complete flexibility with lighting and backgrounds, ensuring polished, professional results.

Not sure where to go? Don’t worry, I’ve put together an exclusive guide to the best photoshoot locations in and around Jacksonville.

The Best Time

Choosing the right time for your family session is important. It’s all about finding a time when everyone is relaxed and in a good mood. I usually recommend three ideal time slots.

Midday, closer to the evening.
When the sun isn’t as harsh, we get softer light, perfect for outdoor locations around Jacksonville. Shaded spots help reduce squinting, and a little cloud cover works wonders.

Golden Hour (Afternoon).
The softest, most flattering light happens just before sunset. Even if it’s a bit cloudy, the gentle light creates beautiful, natural family photos.

Early Morning.
For those early risers, sunrise offers calm, cool light before the heat kicks in. It’s a peaceful time, and the lighting is perfect for creating a fresh, serene look.

Florida weather can be tricky, but I keep a close watch and rarely need to reschedule. Reach out if you have questions or want to book your session!

Get the Family Excited for Picture-Perfect Moments

Making your family photoshoot fun starts with building some excitement! Chat about the location—whether it’s a favorite park, the beach, or somewhere new—and get everyone involved in choosing outfits or planning fun ideas for the session.

Let your kids know there will be a photographer, but make it fun! Some kids love pretending they’re on an adventure or a little performance, while others might just want to play and enjoy the day.

One great way to get everyone excited is to flip through old family photos together. It helps remind everyone how special these moments are and gets them ready to make new memories!

Choose Outfits That Work for You

For your family photos, you’ve got two solid options when it comes to outfits:

1. Be Yourself

Let each family member pick something that reflects their personality. Whether it’s casual, fun, or a bit quirky, the key is comfort. When everyone feels good, the photos will look natural and relaxed.

2. Go for a Coordinated Look

If you want a more polished feel, try coordinating outfits with complementary colors. You don’t need to match exactly, but using a color palette can tie everyone’s look together for a more styled vibe.

Quick Tips:

  • Choose comfortable clothes that everyone likes.
  • Start planning with mom’s outfit.
  • Avoid busy patterns, bright logos, or anything too distracting.

Keep Everyone Well-Rested and Fed

This might seem like common sense, but it’s super important to make sure everyone is well-rested and has had something to eat before the session. Happy family, happy photos!

Bringing along snacks is always a good idea too. We can take little breaks during the shoot to recharge. Just be sure to pack easy, mess-free snacks—nothing too sticky or that leaves colorful traces, like lollipops, unless you’re going for a blue-tongue look!

Creative Props to Make Your Session Unique

Props can add a special touch to your family session, making it more fun and personalized. Whether it’s playful items for the kids or a creative idea for a themed shoot, the right props can elevate your photos.

Fun Ideas for Kids

Bring items like a favorite stuffed animal, bubbles, or a skateboard to keep the kids excited and engaged. These props help create natural, playful moments that make the session fun.

Themed and Unique Props

If you’re dreaming of something more creative, we can make it happen! Think flower crowns, light fabrics, vintage furniture, or a cozy picnic setup. Some ideas include:

  • White sheets or fabrics for a dreamy look.
  • Flowers and crowns for a boho feel.
  • Light furniture for a cozy touch.
  • Picnic setups for a relaxed vibe.

Be yourselves and have fun

The most important tip: relax and enjoy yourselves! Don’t worry about perfect poses or getting the kids to smile just right. The best photos come when you’re having fun, and I’m here to help you feel comfortable and keep the vibe light.

One quick tip—bribing the kids with treats during the session usually doesn’t work. Instead, plan a fun activity for after the shoot, like going for ice cream. That way, the session feels like part of a fun day.

And hey, if things don’t go as planned and someone’s just not feeling it (kids or spouses!), we can always reschedule. It happens!

In-Home Photoshoot

Feeling unsure about a photoshoot at home? Don’t worry—your space is special just as it is, and I’m here to capture the warmth and authenticity of your family’s environment.

Start by clearing away any visible clutter—things like piles of mail or laundry can take attention away from the moments we want to capture. Meaningful items that tell your family’s story are welcome, and as for toys, it’s great to tidy them up beforehand, but if they come back out, no problem—let’s embrace the moment!

No need for deep cleaning. I’m focused on how the light interacts with your family and will work to keep any clutter out of the frame. If something needs a little shift to make the shot better, I’ll gently suggest it. Your home is the perfect setting for capturing real, beautiful memories—no need to worry!

Tips When You’re Expecting

Planning a family session while expecting can be extra special, and with a few thoughtful details, it can be even more memorable. Here are some simple tips to keep in mind:

  • Comfort Comes First: Make sure you’ve got comfy shoes for walking between locations. If we’re shooting at the beach, pack an extra outfit so you’re not stuck in sandy clothes after.
  • Show Off That Beautiful Bump: If you want to highlight your belly, go for outfits that hug your curves or flowy dresses that create an elegant, soft look.
  • Add Personal Touches: Bring along something meaningful, like ultrasound photos or tiny baby shoes, to include in the session and make it even more personal.
  • Stay Hydrated and Rested: Bring water, take breaks when needed, and don’t worry—we’ll take things at your pace to keep you comfortable and relaxed.
  • Hand and Ring Focus: Your hands will naturally rest on your belly in many shots, so a quick manicure and shiny rings can make those details pop.

The most important thing? Relax and enjoy!

We’ll capture this beautiful time with ease, making sure it’s a fun and comfortable experience for the whole family.

Important, But Easy to Forget:

Extra Clothes

Messes happen! Be prepared with an extra outfit for the little ones. Plus, it’s a great chance for a quick outfit change to mix up the photos.

Plan Ahead

Give yourself plenty of time for hair, makeup, and dressing. The more relaxed you feel, the better the session will go!

Stay Hydrated

Jacksonville weather can surprise you, so pack water for everyone. Hydrate before and during the session, and don’t forget that all-important bathroom break!

Hope these tips were helpful!
